The internet hit 512K BGP routes today, causing widespread network issues.

BGP is a routing protocol that coordinates routes to blocks of IP addresses. The issue today is that routers only have a certain amount of memory for these routes.  This site explains the issue in more detail.  Appears things have calmed for now.
